Introduction
The IPL season is yet to begin, and there have been a few changes and already a legal dispute for one of them. The replacements include Chetan Sakariya for Umran Malik by Kolkata Knight Riders, Mujeeb-ur-Rahman for Allah Ghazanfar by Mumbai Indians, and Wiaan Mulder for Brydon Carse by Sunrisers Hyderbad, all of which were done seamlessly.
There might be some more with Shardul Thakur and Shivam Mavi for the Mayank Yadav, Mohsin Khan, and Avesh Khan trio of injured superstars in the Lucknow Super Giants team. Bafflingly, Corbin Bosch who replaced Lizaad Williams on the Mumbai Indians side, has one of the more troublesome legal difficulties replacing her and does face some legal ramifications with the PCB for breach of contract. Apparently, he skipped out on the PSL contract for the IPLs.

That will come later, let’s get on to the rules first. The Board of Control for Cricket in India permits changes to be made even before the season begins or during the course of the season provided that a player suffers from injury or sickness that renders him out for the rest of the season. In fact, this season, BCCI has softened the rule allowing replacements up to the 12th league match of the season as opposed to the previous limit of the seventh match.
How do the replacement regulations work in the IPL?
For someone to come in as a Replacement Player, they must have met two conditions: their name must be on the Registered Available Player Pool (RAPP) list for the season in question, and their league fee set for the season – assuming 100% participation from the player – cannot go lower than the reserve price set on the RAPP list.

KKR sign Sakariya as Umran Malik’s replacement
There are examples of franchisees having bowlers on the RAPP list as net bowlers. But that particular franchise shall have no power to prevent a player or players if another franchisee wants to take him/her. A replacement player can be engaged at a charge not exceeding the equivalent league charge which would have been paid to the player who was to be replaced.
“If a Replacement Player has been secured during a certain season, the League Fee which was actually paid to him or her will be varied downwards to take into consideration the franchisee’s matches during that particular season which he or she was registered with the franchise and other relevant deductions,” the rule states.
How do the replacement rules reflect on the salary cap?
According to the BCCI guidelines, “The League Fee payable to any Replacement Player signed pursuant to this paragraph 6 will be ignored for the purpose of the Salary Cap for that Season. If a Replacement Player’s Player Contract is extended in accordance with its terms, the League Fee payable to the Player for the subsequent Season will be charged against the Salary Cap for the relevant Season.” Of course, these must be considered the statutory IPL clauses. In substituting players, franchises must observe the 25 players squad composition rule.
Franchisees that have replacement players for the 2025-2026-2027 seasons may have, if any, the right to renew the contract for the next applicable season. “For the avoidance of doubt, when a franchisee renews the contract of a replacement player, such player shall, for any relevant subsequent season, be treated as any other player for the purposes of the squad composition regulations and the salary cap,” is the clarifying statement from BCCI.
Regarding the mid-season assumption of a player who has participated in a match, it is stated that…
i) The injury or illness must have been sustained during or prior to the 12th League Match of the applicable Team in the Season.
ii) An appointed physician by the BCCI stated that the injury or illness is of a season-ending nature, meaning the Player will not be match fit until after the culmination of the Season (inclusive of the Playoffs).
iii) In the absence of such injury or illness, the Player would be expected to participate in all the remaining Matches of the Season.
iv) The Player will not be able to participate in the remaining League Matches in that Season due to the injury or illness.
Note that the substituted Player cannot participate for the Franchisee in any Match for the remainder of the Season in question.
Mujeeb has been signed my MI for INR 2 crore and he replaces a player who was bought for 4.8 crore Allah Ghazanfar. Mulder and Sakaria got picked up by SRH and KKR for the base price of 75 lakh, which was also their base price. Bosch’s value remains unknown. He registered for the auction for 30 thousand but was not picked up. He replaced another South African Lizaad Williams who was bought at 75 thousand base price by MI. It is thought, however, that Bosch had a contract out for 50-75 grand assumed when he was picked out by Peshawar Zalmi as a Diamond in the PSL draft. For more Latest Cricket Update, Visit Here
