Australia all-rounder Marcus Stoinis has announced his retirement from ODI cricket, which he has played since 2015 with a total of 71 matches. According to the February 6 announcement from Cricket Australia, Stoinis willingly chose to step away to focus on T20 cricket, as he had already been training for it. He was part of the Champions Trophy squad and will now have to be excluded from the lineup.
“I am thankful for every moment spent playing ODI cricket and Stoinis remarked, representing Australia is something that will remain etched in my mind. It has truly been a great experience playing for Australia in gold and green jersey representing the nation at that level is an experience that will remain treasured.”

“In saying that, it certainly wasn’t an easy decision. However, after careful thought, it does appear to be the right moment for me to retire from ODIs and focus on what lies next. There is one thing that I am absolutely certain of and that is the bond we have developed over the years with Ron (Andrew McDonald), who has helped me consider other options,” he concluded.
He had racked up 1,495 runs and 48 wickets in the format by his last appearance on the Pakistan tour in November 2022. Of note, Stoinis was also a part of Australia’s 2023 World Cup winning squad, and in the 2018-19 season, he was the Australian team’s ODI cricketer of the year. Stoinis’s best performance with the bat came against New Zeland in Auckland in 2017, where he scored an unbeaten 146. That was just his second game following Australia’s ODI Tour to New Zeland in 2017.
“Stoin has been such a pivotal part of our ODI setup for the past decade. He is not only a fantastic player but has also been a tremendous asset in the group. He is an exceptionally popular player and a great man. He has been one of the fantastic roles in ODI cricket and played all of his major tournaments. All his efforts should be commended,” Australian men’s Head Coach Andrew McDonald said. Read more, click here
