In a thrilling conclusion at the Junction Oval in Melbourne, England lost a great chance to tie the Women’s Ashes after failing to chase 181 for victory.
Megan Schutt placed Lauren Bell for one aiding the English collapse from 68-2 and 120-5 to 159 all out, allowing England to chase 22 runs from two overs.
Amy Jones, in particular, who remained unfazed on 47, made a mistake by not noticing that she ought to have gone for a run since it was the last ball of the over which was a free hit for England, but they were spared some blushes when Annabel Sutherland was directed off the field for bowling two no balls on the 48th over.
Bell, batting number eleven ended with Schutt’s six balls bottle neck and ended up sacrificing herself that enabled Australia to clinch a seemingly clinching series leading victory and left England in embarrassment.
The Australians were skittled out for just 180 runs in what can only be described as a devastating career performance from the English bowling unit led by Sophie Ecclestone and Alice Capsey who delivered 4-35 and 3-22 respectively.
Alice Capsey’s stunning dismissal of Ellyse Perry for a disputed 60 kickstarted what can only be described as an abysmal English batting collapse losing eight wickets while adding a mere 49 runs.
The absence of tactical awareness after the pressure was amped up was the most alarming observation and given their competitive stature, England would be hard pressed to find an opportunity anytime soon to reclaim the series from Australia.
This ODI series concludes on January 16 in Hobart, after which the England squad will feature in three T20 matches, where each game will award two points, followed by a Test match worth four points.
